Common Courtesy

Long Long ago in a far away land called "I've got manners" common courtesy did exist! People allowed others their breathing space, said "Excuse me" when they needed to walk past you, children were asked to ‘pipe it down' if they were misbehaving or talking too loudly outside their homes or play areas and people actually said please and thank you!

I'm writing this blog on a flight from Rome, I can hardly see, because the woman in front of me just had her dinner and decided to confine me to approximately 30 cm of breathing space by savagely reclining her chair into my face! The passenger behind me has made it very clear by pushing into the back of my seat, that there is no way I am even to dream of reclining ‘my' seat. So here I am dying to explode and scream "swine flu everyone ..... I've got it" just for kicks!

Here below are the situations which make me want to chew my hand off!!!

1. People standing too close to you in a queue.

Where? At the bank. Old people have a fear of being skipped in a queue and therefore shove their whole selves into your posterior. After a Saturday morning watching the poor teller patiently explain to a brainless twit that he needs his wife's signature to access his joint account, I smell of ‘old spice' or minestra. Last week I went to get my passport renewed. Finally my photo does do me justice and I've done away with the convict look on my old one!! Whilst paying for my passport a guy standing behind me was practically licking my ear he was so close to me. The young woman behind the desk had to tell him to step back whilst she muttered to me "kieku jista da jsir parti minnek."

I shuddered at the thought of it.

2. People belching loudly in public. On my very rare outings to Paceville my evening is never complete till a guy burps up a storm whilst he's walking back to his car. Faced with looks of disgust he will very drunkenly reply "eh tfewaqt tridx tilghaqli ****" - Charming!!!

3. People talking loudly on their cell phones or to each other. Like I give a flying pony's dung when Shenice started school or that Tasha dumped Darren or Tyron cheated on Nevise! Personal information should remain personal and we shouldn't over hear it. Also if someone wants to ask a question to anyone else why don't they just move closer to that person instead of yelling all the way across a room "Branstiiiiin, trid nuggets?" or "Lellyyyyyyy you want a bergeeeeehhhh?" Cue: queasy stomach due to the excessive fake posh tone!

4. What else consitutues lack of common courtesy you ask? - People who address you like a moron. When I travel I like to ask questions and find out things I'm unsure of before I get to an airport and find out I'm in the wrong terminal or when I break into a cold sweat when I realize that I'm stranded there because I don't have the right ticket. Experience teaches you all these things. So I asked if I would need to print out my reservation document at the hotel before I caught the airport shuttle, to which the receptionist replied with eye-rolling, huffing and puffing and a very cold "ma e ovvio che no, signorina" to which I would've loved to sneer, "if it were so obvious to me I wouldn't be asking, now would I?" he was possibly the only Italian male who didn't slobber at the sight of me...or the sight of any other female for the matter!

5. People who can't or rather won't control their children. How many times have you been out to dinner and I don't mean a fast food chain where you're asking for it..but a nice respectable eatery and "Rosemary's Baby" shows up in human form. Screaming and crying ensues or violent running around and bumping into your chair while you're trying to eat with chopsticks.

Of course my list could go on forever and I'm sure many of you could add to it and feel my pain. No I'm not senile in my twenties, I just wish someone would say "ooh I'm sorry" when they practically knock you over whilst on the way to the toilet in a nightclub and say Please and Thank you more often!

Very sensible comments and glad that there are people who like you do, believe in good manners even if it has become an uphill struggle. Recently a receptionist at a hospital asked another employee (referring to me as I waited for another receptionist's attention) "DAN xi rid?" Charming!!!! Besides, have you ever been on a public bus and experienced the rudeness and uncivil behaviour of some drivers? The fleecing of tourists who are more often than not short-changed? The utterly selfish passengers who block the aisle close to the driver's cabin and who refuse to move back even if there are empty seats or empty standing space? What about those who sit on the outside of a two-passenger seat occupying the other half with their stuff, or even if not have that look about them which makes you know they would budge only with an effort? Not to mention the loud "music" and/or inane stuff spouting from mediocre broadcasters being forced on the passengers irrespective of their tastes! Another peak of bad manners and grouchiness is that Maltese malady of hissing "YESSSSS?" in shops, banks any place where a service is "provided". The list is endless...don't give up!

I can't agree with you more on all that was said especially the 'obvious' incident. What about courtesy on wheels?! I see parallels in what you said and to the way many Maltese drive..but let's not open that can of worms!

I love the scene when you go pick a bus to paceville or so from under 'bieb il-bombi' from 7am to 8am. The savagery of especially women to ride the bus to have a seat really takes your breath away....

Ira and et all let's be honest excuse me i don't wish to sound nerdy but todays' people attitudes in general has become so so casual to say the least dress code together with personal upkeep has become so unimportant in the psychic of especially teenagers . Rebellious behaviour sort of has been allowed to manifest itself quite without any inhibitions---
anything goes and by the way all this is what our and many other country sowed yesteryear

Very well said Ira !!! Respect from people!!
A dream in Malta Today i was at Sliema quietly at 9 having a breakfast on a rare day leave!! A man near me just lifted his bum up and . . . . to make things worst shouting with a big mouth my god these last days i have a big problem with gas!!! Hello people around you!!! or else ok you can smoke on a table outside but be polite and don't throw the smoke on my table directly. many people just first them second them and maybe if left something for the rest.

Yes so right! Good manners have gone down the drain.

Ever waited on a bus stage for some time? And then the bus comes and everybody tries to jump the queue?

Ever tried to get on the 13 bus from Marsa near the bridge, the residents from the Marsa Open Centre jump from everywhere to get on the bus. They even try to get in three at a time through a 2 ft doorway - let alone keep a queue.

Or (jaqqq!) somebody picking his nose then touching a handle.

I'd better stop!!

It's so true. W're trying hard to teach our 2 year old to use good manners. she might be the only one however. Last Sunday, we took her to the playground. At one point, an older girl knocked her to the ground and said "zul min nofs" instead of sorry. Her mother didn't say sorry either.

Very well said, Ira. I guess the word 'courtesy' has been dropped from our imported English dictionaries and barred from being used in class!!
I may add another two instances which really p*** me off:
- some unknown calling (or rather yelling) you from behind "Chali" or "Joe" or "psssss"
- encountering two or even three oncoming persons walking on a one-metre wide pavement and no one budges to move aside for you!

ummm yeh I can add a few.

I think its common courtesy that cars don't try and kill you on your scooter while you have the audacity to use a roundabout with the expectation of surviving. Yesterday near Luqa airport i was nearly rammed by a twat who did not bother slowing down before entering the roundabout at all, no doubt enjoying the thrill of what may happen if he did not and not being clever enough to consider that he may murder a motorcyclist through his utter negligence. Maltese driving is murderous, as are the pot holes courtesy of the Maltese government.
