New faces, same old habits

When I began this series of blogs by writing about boomerangs, little did I know that the election campaign would end with a major boomerang which cut to bits and pieces the Nationalist Party’s strategy of presenting the election as a chance for Dr Gonzi to promote new faces to the cabinet.

Little did anyone know, for that matter, that Malta’s self-styled environmental champion in the form of PN MP and dentist Dr Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, would end up being embroiled in an environmental scandal all of his own making which has basically put paid to the PN’s strategy of wooing the doubting voters by presenting them with so called new faces which they could vote for.

I say that the scandal is all of Dr Pullicino Orlando’s making because he only made it worse, very much worse himself, by the statements he has made since the scandal was revealed by Labour Leader, Dr Alfred Sant, last Saturday.

Last Saturday, a visibly agitated Dr Pullicino Orlando vehemently denied that he knew anything about the application, which was subsequently approved, for the development of a mega discotheque on his farmland in Mistra which has EU Natura 2000 status and is classified as fully protected and totally outside the development zones by MEPA, so much so that not even a water cistern can be built on it.

Since then, however, it has been revealed that the architect representing the developer who embarked on this deal with the tenant, to whom Dr Pullicino Orlando rented out his pristine land but has so far failed to name, wrote to the same Dr Pullicino Orlando as the owner of the land to inform him of the developer’s intentions.

Hence, if Dr Pullicino Orlando was really against this development he had every opportunity at that point, this is in Septmeber 2005, to tell the developer that he did not want such a development on his land. His antics at Mosta and at the PBS studios, where, mysteriously, he morphed from a dentist to a part-time farmer to a journalist, will not cancel out this simple basic fact.

The time for Dr Pullicino Orlando to object to the rape of Mistra was when he was informed by the developer’s architect in September 2005 not now. That is when his green credentials would have been tested and found sound. As it is his appeal for the application to be withdrawn now sounds very hollow and feeble indeed.

By the way, in the process, the land Dr Pullicino Orlando bought for LM 10,000 in 1999 is now worth LM 1 million given that MEPA has mysteriously and inexplicably approved the proposed commercial development, albeit as an outline development permit. What this means, to level headed people at least, is that the PN’s so called new faces are just as tainted with the old habits of the old faces that the PN strategists were trying so hard to keep out of sight and to replace by these so called new faces.

As it is, the PN now has nothing new to offer since even its new faces have fallen victim to old habits.

I do not blame Alfred Griscti and the MLP to try to flog the JPO affair to death, as this seems to be the only card left for the Maltese Socialists to hang on to. More than this, it is a convenient smokescreen to hide the wheeling and dealing that is going on at the crystal palace in the cloak and dagger process to elect a new party leader. At this point in time, hurt and disappointed labourites prefer being told what is going on in their own party

Are you suggesting that AS is beck. I doubt it :) Would love to have your point of view based on facts.

Looks like one of Mr Grixti's hobbies is property valuation. Well in this case maybe he can help me out by giving an indicative price for the MLP headquarters and property in St Andrews, which the MLP acquired by the stroke of a pen in the eighties and is now worth millions.....

Mr Borg Cardona, maybe Mr Alfred Sant is missing his PRosy Points. Give him a break :-)
Andrew Borg-Cardona (on 17/3/08)
Danny Attard, are you Alfred Sant in disguise?

Further to what has been stated, the Sunday Times reported that according to police statement, JPO had made some calls to take notice of this particular application. I wonder why? Can someone pass me a telephone number as I might decide to build a new respite care centre for politicians at Gnejna Bay or some other place highlighted by Natura2000?

Dear Mr. Edward Saguna, I think that your statement that 'the voting majority thinks otherwise' is factually incorrect. The fact is that the voting majority are being actually ruled by a majority of seats enjoyed by the NP acquired through a minority of votes.

Alfred, Alfred, wherefore art thou Alfred...and for that matter Victor Laiviera!

Alfred, it is time to lick your wounds, turn the page and start deliberating on how the Labour Party lost an election it should have won with a landslide.

The result shows that the Labour party has to do a little more than cry Corruption ! and Scandal !, and it seems from your latest blog that you remain firmly stuck in this methodology.

Yes, there may have been a few scandals, and JPO may ultimately be proven guilty, but does this mean that the Labour party would have brought in a better government for Malta ? I think not. Had Labour won the election it would have been purely by default, and not because the party has proposed anything worthwhile to the electorate. Give us something to chew on - there are many more than half the electorate that want change after 20 years, but for God's sake give us a healthy and strong opposition to vote for.

No. What we got instead is a party who does not respect the fact that we have already voted for the EU package, and suggests that this will now be negotiated. We get a party who say they will remove the surcharge, without committing themselves to how they will finance this, and we get a party who does not see balancing the defecit as a priority because 'other countries get away with it'.

The Labour Party owes it to all of us to now be a serious Opposition - an opposition which embraces the EU and no longer makes it an electoral issue - an opposition which is focused on reaching the same goals as the current government, but possibly with more efficient ways. It is up to Labour to keep the government in check not by crying scandal, but by debating policies and strategy.

This is something that marvels me.... how is it possible that an educated person can ever write: 'PN now has nothing new to offer'. One can be in disagreement with what the PN has to offer, but the voting majority thinks otherwise. I disagree with all MLP, but I still state that the MLP had (and still has something to offer) however these are not valid to me and my family.
Joe Martinelli (on 11/3/08)
Funny how politics work. The MLP's targeted Nationalist MPs have been by and large re-elected while some of the familiar, corruption free, reliable ministers who were not even on the MLP's radar screen found the electorate's door slammed in their face!
The same fate greeted some old zero tolerance MLP MPs.
And I thought that boomerangs only existed deep down under!
