“And Bob’s Your Uncle!.....is he?”

So for those who have never grasped the true meaning of the expression “…and Bob’s your uncle”, I will here forth explain it to you! Please note that till this day, I too did not know what it meant. I was talking with a friend residing in London and he kept dropping it at the end of sentences.

According to Wikipedia, the expression is often used immediately following a set of simple instructions and roughly carries the same meaning as the phrase "and there you have it." For example, "Simply put a piece of ham between two slices of bread, and Bam! Bob’s your uncle!”. So following that logic, I came up with these phrases using the expression.

a) In a situation where, you are single, and you hit the town with your friends. You enter a bar and there ain’t a good looker in sight:

“Order a tray of shooters and Bob’s Your Uncle”, you will find that girls drinking around a tray of booze, draw a lot of attention and pretty soon trays’ll be coming your way before you can say Jiminy Cricket and the guy who was staring scarily at you, doesn’t look too scary anymore…..Erm think I’ve had too many shooters Hicc..

b) In a situation where your mother (if you still live at home, that is) keeps nagging about clearing up the mess in your room. “Grab a big bag throw all the miscellaneous objects running around in it, push it right to the back of your wardrobe so all your clothes camouflage it and Bob’s Your Uncle”. You’ll find that it’s a pretty good hiding place till your mother announces it’s Spring Cleaning weekend and you start to sweat profusely instantly!

c) In a situation where it’s Carnival weekend and you’re a male with no costume. “Throw your sisters’/mother’s clothes on, slap on some lipstick , throw on a hideous wig, DO NOT shave your legs or proceed in tucking your chest hair inwards, get on the bus to Valetta and Bob’s Your Uncle!” You’ve got yourself a HIGHLY original costume and might be proclaimed the New King Carnival!

Bob's your Uncle was used by the MPs of Britain when Mr Salisbury was the Prime Minister, and his nephew got into politics. The MPs used it in a meaning: If your uncle is so influencial, you can do anything...

It's nice to see that the majority of the comments below appreciate the levity of this entry. However, there seems to always have to be the all-too-serious "contributor". I do hope those quotations marks aren't lost on people reading this, because they say all I need to say regards that kind of person.

Well done to Ira for having the capability of being both light and serious depending on which option is called for. Being written a few days before Carnival, I think this kind of entry to her blog is very appropriate. Having just read he rlatest entry, which deals with the spring hunting issue, it is very obvious that she can also tackle very serious matters in a mature manner, as well. So if she chose here to make us laugh, then laugh I shall. More's the loss for those who couldn't recognize humour if it wore a name tag.

Here's from a 44.9 year old - GET YOURSELF A SENSE OF HUMOUR. That's if you want to do more than just survive.

Emma, a 19 year old should be Mature enough to know that the Booze mentioned was just an example. she doesn't have to be influenced and drink just because Ira Losco said it.

Oh Come ooooooon get a life, Ira was just using some comic relief ajma can't you see that? I'm a great fan of Ira but I just don't go boozing just because Ira said that, I do/don't it cause I want to!!! Come on the girl just wanted to make us smile a bit... Go girl you're the best!! (Coming from the BRAINS of another 19year old!!!)

Even a role model needs to let her hair down sometimes. Ira's blog is sometimes about a personal issue and sometimes a very humorous one. This blog is very light and only meant to entertain. I think it would be worse if she tried to project a 'holier than thou' image. She is normal just like any other person. I'm glad to see a 19 year old think so strongly about certain issues, but I don't think Ira needs you to tell her to be a good role model to our youngsters she has done So much for them already.

The fact remains that Ira should not be constantly mentioning booze as one of her highlights... you'll be surprised how many youngsters wish to follow in her footsteps... I still think that she is not setting a good example... irrespective of whether youngsters will still drink. We need to be objective and realise that even what may seem to be an irrelevant comment may have an impact. This is coming from the mouth of a 19 year old.
Chris Mallia (on 9/2/08)
The topic has nothing to do with booze, Emma. Many youngsters do not need any special encouragement from their idols to have a shooter, but they just go for it anyway.

Good Lord! Will the bunch of you just lighten up a bit. So Ira found "Bob's your Uncle" fascinating and wanted to share it with us. Does it all have to be serious talk with you guys? Serious gets boring. Haven't you ever stopped to look at and appreciate the little things you take for granted once in a while?
Emma Muscat (on 8/2/08)
Since you seem to be such an idol for certain youngsters I would refrain from constantly mentioning booze in your posts... you're not setting a good example I'm afraid. No excuse that you may come up with will justify this.

This is a catchphrase which seemed to arise out of nowhere and yet has had a long period of fashion and is still going strong. It’s known mainly in Britain and Commonwealth countries(and is not a cockney slang phrase), and is really a kind of interjection. It’s used to show how simple it is to do something: “You put the plug in here, press that switch, and "Presto" Bob’s your uncle!”.
GOT IT ? Ira's way of explaining was cool and well explained so " Leave it out " !!!!!
Alex Clayman (on 6/2/08)
Being a Maltese Londoner, 'Bob's your Uncle' is simply a way of saying how easy or straightforward something is. Forgive me, but the long explanation was slightly uneccesary. Any more Cockney slang questions?
