City Gate viewing time over: What now?
So the Nationalist government has given us a chance and has even been encouraging us citizens of Malta to view at the Museum of Archaeology Renzo Piano's plans for our dear capital Valletta. Its insistence to do so can be seen in the way it extended viewing time of the same display up till the end of October. And what was the people's response?
Since no visitors' book accompanied the exhibition, one cannot really say, but I'm sure thousands took the opportunity because they genuinely love and want the best for Valletta. The unfortunate thing is that, due to this inexplicable lack of professionalism, we don't have the people's comments as a yardstick by which to measure the public's opinion. Or was this lack intentional because the whole project is a fait accompli? Indeed, I really hope not, because the deluge of letters referring to the subject and carried by this paper clearly show that the majority are united against Mr Piano's project. So many more thousands are of the same opinion, but of course they find it rather out of their way to put pen to paper and air their views in the paper. And of course, there are other newspapers in circulation. This is why it was imperative to have a visitors' book. It seems the Prime Minister's wish is to go ahead with Mr Piano's plans, if possible in the next three years, in time before the general election. If this were to happen, I honestly think it will pave the way for a Labour Party landslide victory. The implementation of the project would be an act of arrogance against democracy, a sure sign of abuse of power. I truly hope the Nationalists do their homework with diligence and listen to what the people have to say on the matter.
Having waited all these years I know that so many are at the end of their tether and would like to see a monumental construction rising out of the ruins of the old opera house. But, is it wise to press ahead with what is being proposed when so many are openly opposing it? Is it prudent to do so when the country is experiencing a bad patch? To do so when there are so many other priorities to see to (to mention a few: restoration of old forts, resurfacing of so many major and secondary roads, landscaping, an overdue massive clean-up of the countryside, investing in energy-saving alternatives, cutting-cost exercises to ease the national deficit) is surely irresponsible and suicidal. I'm not going to reiterate what so many others have already said, but suffice it to say that:
a. A theatre without a roof would be ideal only in summer, and then if fireworks aren't let off every weekend. Or should I say every day?
b. St Elmo and the Auberge de Baviere are better alternatives where Parliament can be sited. I have already expressed my view about St Elmo's advantages in The Times (April 20).
c. Freedom Square should be left an open space and landscaped with benches, a handful of trees and a monumental fountain; a place where shoppers, visitors and sightseers can relax.
d. The city of Valletta deserves a city gate and not a city gap.
Having said all this, my sincerest wish is that Lawrence Gonzi has enough nerve and responsibility to heed what the public and the NGOs have to tell him. Such an act wouldn't be the quality of a weak personality; on the contrary, it would be synonymous with a mature and democratic mind. And the people will remember him for it.

Again, wouldn't it be far better for Valletta to have a thriving and vibrant theatre, bringing Maltese and tourists into Valletta, ensuring the survival of shops and restaurants and reviving nightlife in Valletta, instead of the cemetery it seems in winter. This revival certainly won't happen with a roofless theatre that can only be used on some summer evenings.
Your talk of getting on with things only refers to upper Valletta,as this project will not do anything for lower Valletta which has been neglected for a century, does that not worry you,or is it only your parking rights that worry you?
Do we think so little of ourselves that we don't believe we can put our heads together and come up with an improved version of these plans within a reasonable time?
Being a Valletta resident the only real problem I see is the erosion of parking space these 3 projects will create. But perhaps we will come to our senses and put a stop to the excessive traffic entering/parking in Valletta.
So please, everyone stop kicking a fuss. We want to move foreward. Do not try to keep us back!
"Why does it always boil down to political agendas? "
Good question! Why did you drag the opposition into the equation?
This is not a case of one party being for the project and the other side against. The rejection of Piano's joke is across the board. The people who are objecting to this insult to our capital city come from Labour, Alternattiva and, YES, even Nationalists. The one thing that binds these persons, from all the political spectrum, from all walks of life, is a love for Valletta and a sense of what is aesthetically appropriate for their city. They refuse to bow their head in servile acquiescence to what is presented as a fait-accompli by a minister who has more power than artistic nous. Piano's original proposal was - rightly - thrown out some years ago after the people spoke out against it. Yet, Piano has once again been 'appointed'. Why Piano? Does someone have a personal interest?
We were never given a satisfactory explanation for his 'choice' some years back. We still do not know why it has to be Piano. His style just does not fit.
"So many more thousands are of the same opinion, but of course they find it rather out of their way to put pen to paper and air their views in the paper". How about the thousands in favour who they too, find it inconvenient to put pen to paper and bother to air their views on a newspaper?
The Opposition has never come out with its own recommendation because it operates in the exclusive gray area waiting for the moment of opportunity and declare its support for either side of the issue depending on political expediency. Why does it always boil down to political agendas?
Had the Opposition come out in favour of the project without reservation or, with a better idea, it would not have been a great surprise if the 'thousands' expressing themselves in this paper (and others) would have remained silent.
Then there is the FAA!

That would be an entrance worthy of a world heritage city and something which the present administration would be proud to be remembered for.

As for the "No"s, news papers are witnesses of all those who do not agree at all with part or all of the Piano project, particularly the open Theatre which was not on the agenda of the Prime Minister when visiting Piano. It is the sole responsibility of the foreign architect and if proceeded with the responsibility is shared by Gonzi and Gatt.
Most probably both Prime Minister and Minister would not like to slap Piano to be the only reason to proceed with the plan but would not hesitate to line up the population and slap each on the face.
A marble slab should then be placed at the entrance to the theatre in honour of both Prime Minister the Hon. Dr Lawrence Gonzi and the Honorable Minister Dr Austin Gatt for generation to admire or despise.
Perhaps an enormous slab could be added below for people to write comments. Since a slab whatever the size is not enough, a book of (condolences) could fill the role. It ill run into several volumes.
First and foremost ,it is compulsary that all plans and details have to be submitted and approved by MEPA .
There are numerous factors in this Project that breach MEPA regulations .
Precedents, that put any square / piazza at risk ! if a PARLIAMENT HOUSE replaces the square. It's like the Manager moving his Office & Boardroom to the Reception Lobby .
The glass partition/s , and the vertical steel (?) structure of the theatre and the Elevator along the Bastion ,are aesthetically bizarre .
A Fortified City , especially its Main Entrance without a gate, is a MOCKERY to the CITY!!!!!
The proposed breach (sic.) will be clad in cold sheet metal !!!!! Oh ,What an OPERA !!!
