Police get shirty over 'nude' mannequins

Bare message... The mannequins in the shop window of DNA Emporium. Photo: Chris Sant Fournier.

When Marcel Ellis chained together a number of undressed mannequins in his Mosta shop window with an accompanying leaflet to raise awareness about sex trafficking, little did he know what was in store.

At around 5 p.m. last Friday, two policemen walked into the DNA Emporium outlet in Eucharistic Congress Road and instructed the owners to dress up the plastic figures.

Mr Ellis, the co-owner and founder of the DNA Emporium Foundation, was incredulous: "These are normal plastic mannequins with no particular 'details' showing. There is nothing sexual about it, apart from the fact that it is highlighting the problem of sex trafficking."

One end of a metal chain has been attached to the male mannequin's hand and the other end is tied to the woman figure's waist in a symbolic message against the oppression of sex slaves.

Yet the police instructed the owners to cover up the mannequins after they said they had received a report from "someone influential" that the models were too explicit.

Mr Ellis said: "It is absurd that a couple of plastic dolls should cause such mayhem. Should we pull down all the manifestations of nude portraits and sculptures spread around the world, including places of worship? Should we ban our children from changing their doll's clothes? People should be more concerned about the real plight of the illicit sex industry than about a couple of harmless mannequins."

Mr Ellis said the idea behind the campaign was to expose reality whereby 29 million people worldwide are forced into modern day slavery. The vast majority of these are forced into the sex trade industry.

"Sex trafficking exists everywhere, even in Malta, where little seems to be done to counter it. Just look at the Eastern European prostitutes in our streets."

The foundation is planning a high profile campaign to raise awareness on the problem and is working in conjunction with the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem - Malta and the Rotaract Club Malta La Valette, as well as local personalities.

Mr Ellis considers the police complaint so absurd that he intends to ignore it. Questions sent to the police last Friday night were not answered.

Last month in Iran, police warned shop owners against displaying female mannequins wearing underwear or showing off their curves as part of a government campaign against Western influence.

Excellent shot Times photographer! Cool story too.
Malta does have a sense of humour after all.
Hilarious! LOL
Brilliant idea Mr Ellis!!!
An eloquent art statement if we ever saw one!

Possibly if prostitution was legal, taxed, and regulated throughout the EU and else-ware, the few or many who consequently suffer as a result of forced sexual exploitation, may enjoy reprieve....

My 62 year old roommate is rolling around the floor in hysterics muttering What a bunch of prudes…

I better go put some clothes on my Cindy doll and Action Man, I mean my daughter’s before they come and arrest me, her. Then after that, the whole family is going to go around the island and put dressing gowns on all the nude statues and beanies on any bald heads
lol.
We have an idea for a rival newspaper that will really sell well "The Medieval Times of Malta"

That "someone influential" might have not liked the new fashion of birthcloths and chains - maybe he has more than one partner, therefore even more chains.

Seriously I believe that there's nothing wrong with nudity, especially when mannequins have no sexual organs to flaunt. Police are always instructed by their superiors who in turn are instructed by their superiors... very worrying knowing how our police force are nothing but pawns. What make this alarmingly grave is the fact that what if this "influential person" had hidden reasons against such a protest? What if there are several other "influential people" who are blindfolding our gullible police force (always assuming that police act in bona fide) while becoming ever more influential from the human trafficking racket?

It's not an issue of religions, beliefs or morality, only a moron will feel offended by some plastic shaped as a human figure. It just boils down to one thing - whoever reported wants to take the focus off an important issue and alienate the general public into a needless debate. I hope things will improve because unfortunately such events will get us nowhere except of making us red-faced.

@A. Muscat,

The Bible allows a person to infer things and interpret that which is written in it. Eg: In the English language, when one has a son, it is inferred that ‘a son was begotten’. This is the same thing. The modern English versions of the Bible have removed the old English words like “Thou” and “Thee” to make it more understandable to modern English speaking people.

This same cannot be said for the Koran however, which Muslims take to be the direct& unalterable word of God. That is why they still believe that ‘the sun sets into a muddy pool’ every evening& that “the devil resides in one of their nostrils” which are some of the things that Mohammed taught.

This is the main reason why all knowledge stops when Islam enters. The proof is in the pudding, all technologies and innovations we enjoy today originated in the Christian parts of the world& are a testament to the Judeo-Christian tradition where learning is encourage& exalted whilst countries that followed Islamic teachings have become conspicuous by their lack of innovation, exploration& new discoveries.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
John 3:16
I am quoting the above from King James "translation" of John 3:16. If we were to open up the Revised Standard Version of the Bible on this exact same verse we will find it now translated as: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, ...."

Why is this? What is going on here? As far as what I know, the RSV is the work of so many Biblical Christian scholars of the highest eminence supported by fifty cooperating Christian denominations. They produced the RSV in an effort to correct the "many" and "serious" errors they had found in the King James Bible. So why have they scrapped the word "begotten" from this cornerstone of Christian preaching?
Any explanation please for this serious alteration of the Bible? And which Bible of the so many Bibles should be God’s word?

@A. Muscat

If you are questioning why God cannot have a son or a daughter, then your are putting limitiations on God.

God, the creator of heaven and earth and all of the universe, seen and unseen, can have anything God wants.

If you cannot accept that, then you cannot accept God.
Trevor Lorenzo Mizzi (4 weeks, 2 days ago)

@ A. Muscat,

"Could you please explain why should God have a son or a daughter?"

"Because the Christian faith clearly states that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, and that whoever believes in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, will not perish, but have eternal life.

Jesus was not just a man.

John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

In addition, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, did in fact die of the cross for the sins of the world, and His Father in heaven raised Him from the dead on the third day.
These truths are not refutable as they are spoken from the true Word of God, The Holy Bible.

It does not get any clearer than that for those that can comprehend the english language.

@ A. Muscat,

Christians believe that the eternal Son of God, one with the Father from all eternity, united to Him in one Spirit, "became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14)& took "the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:7).This is something that Mohammed could not understand& comprehend when he was trained by Augustinian monks in Syria.

A Trinitarian view of God’s nature& being can’t be proven from the Bible. Since the books of the Bible are not written as theological tracts, this may seem on the surface to be true. There is no statement in Scripture that says, "God is three Persons in one being.

But such passages as:Romans 14:17-18; 15:16;Corinthians 2:2-5; 6:11; 12:4-6; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 2:18-22; 3:14-19; Ephesians 4:4-6; Colossians 1:6-8;1 Thessalonians 1:3-5; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14; Titus 3:4-6. that the New Testament faith is implicitly Trinitarian. Of course, it’s true that none of these passages say directly that "God is a Trinity" or "This is the Trinitarian doctrine" But they don’t need to. As the books of the New Testament are not formal, point by point treatises of doctrine.

@ A.Muscat,

"The Quran says God has no son and is not a father.
Why should a God have a son or a daughter? "

Jesus called Himself the "Son of God" throughout the Gospels, (John 3:16-18), and the disciples also identified Him as the Son of God in their writings, (Rom 1:3).
Further, Jesus identified Himself as God revealed in the flesh, (John 8:58), and His disciples identified Him as God, (John 1:1, Phil 2:5-11).

Jesus is the Son of God. This means that He is God, revealed to man. The term "Son of God" is an analogy, describing the relationship between two persons of God. Christ is the image of God to mankind. God - omnipotent, revealed Himself to mankind, in Christ.
Muhammad's misconception of the Sonship of Christ is another proof that the Quran was not revealed to him by God, but rather it was built upon Muhammad's own very limited knowledge.

This is further proof that muslims worship a different God than Christians,
Muslims believe God made the heaven and the earth, yet can't believe that God made a son.

Iraq - the West is there for the Oil wells and nothing else.

Afghanistan - there for the Opium and nothing else (90% of all Opium come from this country) and nothing much else.

Only the naïve believe that we are there to “bring Freedom and Democracy,” If that were true, we would start with our friend and ally, Saudi Arabia, a totalitarian despotic regime created by the Americans in the 1930's and now propped up by the amassed wealth of trillions of dollars of oil revenues.

For Shaw to speak about ‘genuine’ Islam he must have had to read the Koran in Arabic, otherwise it is not the real deal.

So Shaw must have been reading, some flowery English version I surmise, designed to deceive the gullible ‘infidel’ – using “taqiya” or deception as prescribed by Mohammed himself.

The Quran says God has no son and is not a father.
Why should a God have a son or a daughter? And most importantly, did Jesus ever say that he is God or son of God or even a part of a Trinity? I challenge you to quote any verses in both OT and NT where the word Trinity is mentioned.

You were so swift …lol
The continuation of Winston Churchill’s quote:

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.
--------------------------------------------
I guess both predictions of Churchill and Bernard Shaw are reflecting the reality of what our troops are facing right now in both Iraq and Afghanistan!

I repeat, if you can’t annihilate them find a common ground and live with them. Let them be Israelis and Palestinians …Muslims and Christians …etc.

A common ground makes every one happy (bar the cataclysmic agendas of far-rights intellectually bankrupted politicians and the Zionists). Good nite

It's not the first time that there were complaints about undressed mannequins, coincidently (or maybe not) in another Mosta shop, one that sells lingerie. The naked female figures were so anatomically correct that the person complaining was really offended. What's up with Mosta shops?
Trevor Lorenzo Mizzi (on 20/10/09)
@ A. Muscat.

"Is there more than one God? "

Allah cannot be the God of the Bible

Islam's Quran and its own adopted practices prove that Allah cannot be the same God of Christianity. In Arabic the word 'Allah' may mean 'god' but that does not mean Allah and the God of the Bible are one and the same. They cannot be because:
Islam has come to mean 'submission. The goal of Islam is to bring the whole world into submission to Allah. The Quran (Sura's 2, 4, 5, 9 and 47) teaches that all 'infidels' (non-Muslims) must either convert to Islam or be killed or enslaved .
The Quran says God has no son and is not a father. Muhammad taught that Jesus and Christians were not to be taken as friends (Sura's 5 and 9).
Allah was the pagan moon god of Mohammed's Quresh tribe represented by various idols, including a sacred stone, called the Kaaba.
Trevor Lorenzo Mizzi (on 20/10/09)
@ A. Muscat,

If you want to quote great men on islam then none are greater than Winston Churchill:
""How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men."
A. Muscat (on 20/10/09)

You keyed in:
‘The core theme of Islam is contained in the Islamic shahada which reads "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet."

Is there more than one God?

Before you jump and shoot critics and affront others please note that my message in every issue is quite simple and read: If you can’t annihilate them find a common ground and live with them. Let them be Israelis and Palestinians …Muslims and Christians …etc.

I am done mate. Bonne nuit to you and whom may appears again from your end!

Thank for the link you provided although I am not keen to Google and comment but any way this seems to match perfectly with Sir George Bernard Shaw in 'The Genuine Islam,' Vol. 1, No. 8, 1936. in what he predicted about Islam.

'If any religion had the chance of ruling over England, nay Europe within the next hundred years, it could be Islam."
“I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality. It is the only religion which appears to possess that assimilating capacity to the changing phase of existence which can make itself appeal to every age. I have studied him-the wonderful man and in my opinion, he must be called the Savior of Humanity."
"I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it the much needed peace and happiness: I have prophesied about the faith of Muhammad that it would be acceptable to Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today.”

How ironic, the "someone influential" has through his/her actions managed to give the owner of this establishment so much free publicity, it has completely backfired. Reminds a few years back when all hell was let loose about the movie Da Vinci Code.
Trevor Lorenzo Mizzi (on 20/10/09)

@Peter Korsten ,

Islamic theological basis needs a detailed exploration to understand this riddle of the migrant Muslim communities in the West. This clash emerges from the heart of the Islamic creed. The core theme of Islam is contained in the Islamic shahada which reads "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet." Explicit in this central creed of Islam is the denial of all other Gods and all other ways of spiritual life. Also implicit in the Shahada is the denial of the history, cultural and traditional heritage prior to the Islamic revelation.
To devout muslims, Islam in itself is the perfect and complete code of life, culture and tradition thrust directly from the infallible master of the universe. The history, culture and tradition, prior to Islam is unworthy - an era known as the age of Jahiliya in Islam.Since to devout muslims, Islam is prefect in every aspect for living the ideal human life (sura10:37), everything else is unnecessary. Enjoying pork will be the least of our problems. http://sweetness-light.com/archive/uk-muslim-tells-queen-to-convert-to-islam

"It is a well known fact that even in their minority in Western countries; they are very vociferous in demanding that everyone else also obey the dictates of their Muslim faith."

What kind of complete and utter nonsense is that?

What IS a well-known and well-documented fact is that Muslims are, at best, not readily accepted into society, and more likely to be verbally abused or harassed because they look different.

Now whether they differentiate themselves is a cause or an effect of the attitude of the native inhabitants is a matter of debate, but I'm yet to see, hear or read about the first Muslim who lives in Europe and demands that I stop eating pork.

I bet the 'influential person' was hoping that the mannequins would be thrown out and he/she would retrieve them under cover of darkness and use them as one does - I am told - blow-up dolls.
The Venus and the Cranach on the London Tube were removed not so much because they were deemed potentially offensive to travellers but, because they they were easily accessible, there was confern that 'artists with felt-tip pens' would deface them and render them offensive and obscene. I can assure A. Muscat that London can well stomach a nude. And if our Muslim 'guests' find such offensive, they know what they can do.
Good on you Mr. Ellis. Nothing wrong with the body. Nothing wrong with sex. But when money is exchanged, that is obscene. That cancels the event. And Catholic guilt over matters sexual is very damaging to the individual. Take heed.

I have a strong suspicion that naked mannequins and the police are going to feature in most of the newspaper cartoons for the next few days.
Erica Borg (on 19/10/09)
Go Marcel, dare to be different !!
Dont worry about police who have nothing better to do. We are such a close minded island when we want, its so sad that someone influential had nothing better to do either !

"Extremist Muslim Culture"????????????
Which Malta are you on about? The one with 365 churches and one mosque?
Please take note that people (Religious or otherwise) actually do find this kind of affrontery offensive because generally civilized people have an accepted mode of conduct which includes dressing appropriately.
Peter Korsten (on 19/10/09)
The next time that someone tries to run me over when I'm using a zebra crossing, I shall be thankful that the police are doing their utmost to ensure that there are no nude mannequins on the island.

Resources are limited and therefore priorities have to be set. We and our children being run over by someone with a mobile phone glued to his ear obviously take second place to "some influential" instructing the police to take decisive action against this affront to the country's morality.

I shall also be growing a beard and instruct my wife to wear a burka, in preparation of the inevitable introduction of sharia law.
Philip Caruana (on 19/10/09)
lol this country is incredible.

Oops ..my neighbour has a nude sculpture in the garden ...better report her ;)

Nigel Lawrence (on 19/10/09)
I wonder if this "someone influential" goes round the museums, where the classical statues are displayed showing ALL THE DANGLY BITS in their naked glory, with a handkerchief to cover the offending projections. just to impose their distorted sense of morality on other people.

They must be SO frustrated!
E Compagno (on 19/10/09)
OMG!!!

QUICK!!

Some one put a pair of underpants on the Luqa "monument" before the moral police see it!!
James De Giorgio (on 19/10/09)
I'm still waiting for some wise one to blame the church or gonzi for this one...
Malcolm Mifsud (on 19/10/09)
The police had better go and have a look at messages the owner of a shop in Paola Hill is displaying.
Kenneth Cassar (on 19/10/09)
The mannequins are most probably of foreign origin. As a punishment for their obscenity, I would suggest their deportation ;)
David Degiorgio (on 19/10/09)
I wonder why the 'influential' person didn't speak directly to us, the owners! Perhaps he/she wanted to leave the embarrassing part to the police officers, or he/she is too ashamed to show his/her name on the issue.
However knowing the name of who made the report is not our aim, what we intend to do is focusing on the topic SEX-TRAFFICKING and creating awerness, as this is the real issue.
victor pulis (on 19/10/09)
Just a thought. What is more tentalizing a nude mannequin or one dressed up in erotic lingeree? These type of mannequines are displayed in several shops around the island and no one has raised an eyebrow yet. I wouldn't be surprised if some influeantial person will object now and closes the shops selling such items.
Muscat. Pat (on 19/10/09)
There is a two tier system of laws in Malta; one for ordinary citizens where the law is applied to the full warts and all. But then, there is the other side of law, where this is just interpreted when it concerns "important" or "influential" people. Otherwise, how can one explain the removal of plastic mouldings lest they offend the public morals?
Ordinary citizens complain everyday on pot-holes,money gathering wardens, on sewage out falls, on Ministers who break the code of ethics"their" government, and of our set of ethical values. And yet what happens? Nothing, just generic interpretations of the law. It makes you wonder.
anthea doughty (on 19/10/09)
I too would not particulary like to see t his window display, it is in appropriate, however, you have far greater concerns that need your protest and attention ie the fact that as far as your society is concerned, you are well set on your way to being an extremist Moslem culture in the future........sadly

Malta is the most entertaining country in Europe!!! The narrow and closed mindedness certain people make us a laughing stock. Most probably the influential person is either jealous of the male mannequin's package or jealous for the female really nice and firm boobs. Or better, the influential person has a sad sex life and is jealous of the two mannequins. He or she should get a life.

The Police should focus on catching criminals rather than making themselves look ridiculous.

Well done to the shop owner for a very catchy marketing idea. I really liked your shop window. Keep it up!!

Guys .. i think the problem lies more that the fact they are tied up by a chain and naked.. if they where just naked, i think it would not have had such problem ..

If you had to walk by the shop with your 5, 6 year olds and that ask you, why do they have a chain tied up and no clothes? ... What would you reply ..
Is this a good influence..

I really think this campaign needs more attention, but no like this ..

Yes, I agree, these mannequins are evil.

And judging from their looks, probably satanical and heretical too.

I think they should be burned at the stake.
Karl Farrugia (on 18/10/09)
Reading the thread gives me nausea. We live in a country full of ignorant people. Mr Ellis was trying to raise a valid point though most people seemed to be more concerned about a piece of plastic donning clothes (as though there's anything to cover up anyway!?) instead of understanding the argument being made. 10 points to Herman Grech for the last sentence. Indeed instances like this show that we are no better than other stubborn and close minded countries like Iran - and before anyone fires back some generalising comment, Iranians are not arabs.

I am talking about apples also.
You are the one defending Iran and Saudi Arabia with your non sequitur of the removal of a Lucas Cranach poster from the London tube, as if silly things done in christian western cultures absolve the silly things done in islamic cultures.
They certainly do not !
Marcel Ellis (on 18/10/09)
First of all thanks for all the support. I hope that this campaign will raise the much needed awareness of a very real problem, even on our shores.

In all fairness to the Mosta Police, they were very nice, almost embarrassed to have to come to the shop on such a futile issue. It is not they who should be blamed, but whoever this "influential person" is, who is too blind by his own mental perversions to realize it was a humanitarian campaign! In any case, the police action of coming over, did now make international waves! http://www.clothesfreeforum.com/showthread.php?t=15808

Emma Xerri (on 18/10/09)
Get over it!

These are just pieces of plastic.

One reason they might grab people's attention is not that they are nude representations of the human body, but because they are tall and beatifully proportioned. Maybe it will provide the incentive for people to start looking after their health and figures better.

After all, if we really had to see average Joe and Jane in the altogether in the flesh, it would be just a big turn off. Yuks!
Chrissey Zammit (on 18/10/09)
I appreaciate SOME Maltese have strong values and I admire them for it. BUT................... come off it this shop owner was making a stand about the SEX TRADE/ TRAFFICKING that is happening all over the world.
I am surprised police were available to attend this shop, whenever I see police, they are normally stood outside their station SMOKING...........Oh ! they must have run out of cigarettes and had nothing better to do...................DONT worry about covering these Mannequins up, MR. INFLUENTIAL .........TRY asking the young girls who walk around Malta half naked to cover up........................
Norman Camilleri (on 18/10/09)
Well....it could also be the case that Mr. Ellis was actually hurting the 'influential someone's' pocket. It is to be assumed that had Mr. Ellis actually broken any law, he would have been served with a court order. I wonder if the 'influential person' is aware of the fact that 5 year old kids can see as much porn as they want on the net? What next - secular internet? Of course, as in any other situation one sees what one wants to see. Speaking for myself, I would just have seen plastic as my sexual fantasies tend towards flesh and more anatomically correct representations. Still, we all have our little fantasies :)
Charles Grixri (on 18/10/09)
@A. Muscat

I would not talk much about “the human body which should be clad for the sake of reverence it deserves' either if I were you.

Maybe that is why in Muslim Sharia law allows for stoning of adulterers, public floggings and beheadings and amputation of limbs, because the reverence in which it hold the human body.

Given a choice, and most people would agree, I would rather see a million nude Venuses than one of your religion’s sanctioned ‘reverences’ to the human body.
Raymond Cachia (on 18/10/09)
@Rocco Cauchi

Do not be preposterous! This is plastic we are talking about here not actual nude bodies.

And, even if they were, what is so obscene in what God hath created?

Here we are not talking about a mannequin made of stone not about a human being made of flesh and blood, unless of course both mannequin and human are equal according to what you refer too as Catholic values.

Nude Venus poster banned on London's tube
Reuters
A 16th century painting of Venus featuring the Roman goddess of love wearing little but a smile has been deemed too risque for the eyes of London's tube travellers.
London Underground bosses have banned a poster of the 1532 work by German artist Lucas Cranach the Elder, promoting an upcoming Royal Academy exhibition.
The Academy is outraged.

Never mind the plastic nude mannequins, as a young hot blooded mediterranean citizen of this country, i say why not replace these nude fakes with real LIFE models, i am sure the shop will be making a roaring trade, and instead of the police walking in the shop, their minds will be somewhere else, and that is directing the heavy congested traffic, all stopping to gaze., well its a thought though, ah well dream on., and if you look at the photot above i noticed that the once that are mostly amazed are the women? so there is equality for you.As they say the Mind Boggles!
Charles Grixti (on 18/10/09)
I bet that the these same people who object to these manequins see nothing wrong with the nudes in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. In fact, the Vatican nudes probably bring on in them an extra feeling of devotion and holiness.

Smut, like Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This person who ordered the police to remove these manniquins must be so sexually repressed I am afraid that they might just blow up from the tension. Whoever you are, please do us a favour and emmigrate to Iran or Saudi Arabia and let us live in peace.
Rocco Cauchi (on 18/10/09)
To those who are comparing Malta to Iran:
No, this is not an extemist Moslem country but a country where Catholic / humanist values still count and esteem holds for the human body which should be clad for the sake of reverence it deserves. No wonder we are getting so much violent and sexual crime owing to the lack of regard for the human body and the irreverent state of nudity we are witnessing all over. I consider writing against the action taken witnesses to gross lack of self-control, to a mindset of being "with it" and the non-realisation of fallen human nature and that depravity exists and often leads to crime.

To those who criticised the Police:
The display of obscene pictures is still regulated by our laws and the Police did not need to have to divulge that the mannequins gave offence to an influential person, if it is so. They should in any case have acted ex officio the moment they became aware of it - without inopportune words.

To anyone wanting to fight sex trafficking:
Such a serious concept deserves more than a base manifestation to attract attention. Let's get down to the truth.

Victor Cutajar (on 18/10/09)
Is this occurred in Malta or Iran or it could be in Iraq also
J Micallef (on 18/10/09)
I'm quite curious to find out who the "influential person" is...the Mosta Mayor, who would not even officiate civil weddings in his hometown? Tonio Borg? The Police Commissioner? The Justice Minister? A nun? or some retrograde person blogging on the net or calling the right Minister as has happened in the City Lights case?
C Gatt (on 18/10/09)
Whether nude mannequins should dress a shop window is a matter of taste, but the really scary part of this whole story is that the police went to this shop and asked the owner to remove the mannequins not because there was a law stipulating their removal but because an 'influential person', name unknown, deemed it so.

It is very disconcerting that the police feel they can take action because an 'influential' person has asked them to. It seems that influential people can now cast their stones and hide their hands behind the authority of the police.
Joseph v Micallef (on 18/10/09)
@Edric Micallef Figallo - Excuse me but I don't blame at all the journalist to have referred to Iran. The first thing that came to my mind was that this was some mix-up and that the article was actually about some extremist-islamic country where the sharia is the law, or worse! I wonder what next!

Mannequins are to be put in the window of a shop solely to show how cloths stay on a person. So owners should find other ideas how to raise awareness about sex trafficking.

No curvy mannequins in Iran shop windows police
Reuters
Iranian police warned shopkeepers on Tuesday not to use mannequins without headscarves or which exposed body curves, official news agency IRNA reported.
"Using unusual mannequins exposing the body curves and with the heads without Hijabs (Muslim veil) are prohibited to be used in the shops," Iran's moral security police in charge of Islamic dress codes said in a statement carried by IRNA.
Iranian police have stepped up a crackdown on both women and men, boutiques and small companies which fail to enforce strict religious dress codes since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came to office in 2005.

The measures are the latest in a country-wide campaign against Western cultural influences in the Islamic Republic, where strict dress codes are enforced.

The morality police strike again! Mr. Ellis is to be commended for highlighting the probelm of sex slavery. It seems someone influential deems that plastic mannequins pose a greater threat to our morality than the dehumanising subject of sex slavery . Out of sight out of mind eh? What an infantile perception. Is Mr. Ellis about to be hauled off to court for offending Public morality? This really takes the biscuit!

this goes to show how close minded our country still is. I do appreciate Malta having strong values, because compared to other countries we still have a respectable society but, i mean come on! are we serious!?!? this was plain and simple an art installation. is this the future people involved in the creative industry are offered in this country? Why is it that creative people and artistic people in our country are still at the bottom of the chain? If we lack anything from other countries such as England, is the freedom of speech and freedom to communicate through art! This was art with a message, and hello!!! wake up!?!? we are living in the 21st century! get over it! enough of the landscapes and still life drawings please! let us bring on the contemporary controversial art to this island!
on an other note, well done to the shop owner for ignoring the police warnings. dont give up!

Can the commissioner of police investigate why some police officers were sent there wasting time and public money? And if he manages to find a good reason or better excuse, they should go back in the dark ages and cover most of our monuments and statues. But I'm sure no one will take notice of this simple humble letter, written by a simple citizen, created to pay taxes an so on...

This is absolutely stupid - why cannot the police check whether something is legal or not before taking action - how can they just act after a complaint by someone - influential or otherwise? So if I complain that the colour of paint that my neighbour has used is offensive to my eyes, would the police go an ask him to change it?

Come on, we are in the year of our Lord 2009 and not the Victorian era!!

There hundreds of facts and reasons which proves this country of ours is secretely governed by the church and religion. We are truly the Iran of europe. Hope that the next generation will not fall in the same trap and will move the country away from the middle ages. Our problem is that we still look at our past and continue building on it, our religious path that is. You can still keep your morals even if you are forward thinking.

I hear that the leaf is to be reinstalled on the Palace Neptune as he is more 'detailed' than the mannequines! What about art exhibitions showing nudes? and who exactly is this influential person? These undressed mannequines have been on display in several shop windows for ages and the police (and the general public it seems) have never taken any action/notice of them since they are not breaking any law.
Burkas anyone?
Karl Stagno-Navarra (on 18/10/09)
I would have expected such action where the Constittion would have the Sharia Law entrenched. Next is that the police raid all toy shops and ban kids from owning Barbies and the lot. I believe that the police should really focus on much serious issues over which they still have to answer, especially on manhandling. If the police admitted that somebody influential led them to "correct" the "obscenity"....could they tell us if it was the Mullah Omar or Moqtada Al Sadr?
